EXAMINATION

Semester End Examinations (SEEs)

Semester End Examinations are conducted by the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, as per the time table published. This time table is published by the University approximately 2 months prior to the commencement of examinations. The SEEs are conducted separately for Laboratory courses and theory courses.

The laboratory SEEs are conducted in batches of 10-12 students. Two examiners (one internal and one external) are appointed by the university for this purpose. The laboratory SEEs are scheduled, normally, 3-4 days after the last working day of the semester.

The process begins, 2 weeks before the commencement of examinations, with the release of examination notification by the university. The students will apply for the examinations with the details of courses and their personal details uploaded onto the university examination portal. The application process for examinations by the students is monitored by their faculty mentors and department EMS coordinator. The university will release the examination admission tickets of the students and the same will be distributed to the students by the department in which they study.

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)

VTU has introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the Academic year 2015-16. CBCS provides choice for students to select from the prescribed courses (Core, Elective & Foundation Courses). Following are the features of CBCS:

  • This involves Credit Based Semester System (CBSS), under which, the requirement for awarding a degree or certificate is prescribed in terms of number of credits to be completed by the students.
  • VTU adopts absolute grading system wherein the marks are converted to grades, and every semester result will be declared with Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The CGPA is calculated for every successive semester, except the first semester.
  • The grading system is as per the following letter grades.

Grade and Grade Points

  • A Student obtaining Grade `F’ shall be considered failed and will be required to reappear in the examination. Such students attend the failed subject in subsequent examination/s and on securing the prescribed passing marks will be awarded with ‘E’ grade irrespective of marks he/she scores.
  • Number of attempts taken to clear a subject/s shall be shown in the transcripts

Grade Point Scale

Internal assessment:

  • 1. Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) procedure is adopted. The CIE marks awarded for tests in theory courses shall be based on three tests conducted at the end of 5th, 10th and 15th week of each semester. Each test will be conducted for a maximum of 50 marks and final test marks shall be the average of three tests, proportionally reduced to a maximum of 30 marks
  • 2. The remaining 10 marks shall be awarded based on the evaluation of assessments/units tests/written quizzes that support to cover both lower and higher order of thinking skills as per Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy and course/programme outcomes.

The final IA is awarded shall be the sum of (1) and (2) above and for a maximum of 40 marks. The CIE marks awarded in case of practical shall be based on the weekly evaluation of laboratory records after the conduction of every experiment and one practical test in the ratio of 60:40. The CIE marks of 40 is awarded in drawing subjects after evaluating assignment for 24 marks and one test for16 marks.

Composition of SEE marks and CIE marks: Weightage is given for Semester End Exams (SEE) and Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE) marks in the ratio of 60:40. Even though, SEE for both theory and laboratory conducted for 100 marks, which will be scaled down to 60 marks. The total marks scored in each course will be equal to 100, which is the sum of SEE marks and CIE marks.
